In Evolution, acclaimed filmmaking team Kornél Mundruczó and Kata Wéber return with a powerful drama that traces three generations of a family unable to process its past in a society still grappling with the wounds of its history, from a surreal memory of World War II to present-day Berlin.
Like the water that connects the episodes of this triptych, memory and identity are flexible, and the way we relate to it can drown us or keep us alive. The pain and stigma that passes from Eva to Lena and then to the teenage Jonas are inexpressible, but they are captured in Mundruczó’s striking images and in Weber’s heartbreakingly poignant, yet acidly ironic and personal script. As generational traumas find new expression in the present beyond religious identity, Evolution’s family looks to a more hopeful future.
